SASSAFRAS (Sassafras albidum) "Saxifrax, Cinnamonwood..."

The leaves of the sassafras tree have been used by many cultures throughout the ages for a savory seasoning. Choctaw Indians of Louisiana were the first to use them. Sassafras leaves, with its unique flavor and pungent, sweet smell, is still used in the South to flavor gumbo recipes. Organic sassafras tea is made from the root bark, and is refreshing and tonic.

Sassafras root bark and root pith are used in alternative medicine as an anodyne (pain reliever) antiseptic, aromatic, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, stimulant and vasodilator. An Infusion is used to treat gastrointestinal complaints, colds, liver and kidney ailments, rheumatism skin eruptions and as a blood purifier. The essential oil (Safrole) from the root bark is used as an antiseptic and pain reliever in dentistry.
